All said, most seeds and saplings are fairly inexpensive in of themselves, but when assessing the cost of a plant it is important to also take into account all the additional costs associated with keeping the plant alive and thriving later in its life. That is, for example, how much will you have to spend on special fertilizers, containers, or pest control agents through the life of the plant? Some plants are extremely tough and low maintenance so obviously the overall cost of growing these plants will be much less than extremely sensitive high maintenance ones. However, the basic seeds and the like should not cost very much regardless, unless you are trying to grow some very exotic and unusual plants, which may be the case for some flower or herb gardeners.

Assuming your garden is more for aesthetics, like a flower or herb garden, the cost really comes down to what precisely you want to grow and whether or not your local climate and soil conditions are appropriate for your chosen plants. Obviously if your local soil and climate are not correct for the types of plants you want to grow, the costs associated with growing them will be much higher as you will have to compensate for the inappropriate environment. Large soil transplants, greenhouses, and other related measures can easily run up into the thousands of dollars. Instead, if you are looking to grow flowers or herbs, it is much less expensive if you choose plants that are designed for your climate and soil.

Much the same can be said about vegetable gardening, although in this case there are usually a lot more diversity and alternative options. Today you can find many alternative variations of most common vegetables that have been bred to survive in climates other than their original one. Similarly you can find variations designed to perform better in naturally hostile soils. Depending on the vegetables you want to grow and the environmental conditions prevailing where you want to grow them (where your garden is), vegetable gardens can be extremely inexpensive or the opposite.
